Lula Attacks Trump and Rubio in Shocking Press Conference

Brazil's President Lula publicly attacked Trump and Rubio after the US proposed new 25% tariffs on Brazilian goods. Lula called Rubio "anti-Latin American" and Trump "the emperor of the world." Behind the outburst: tariffs, Bolsonaro's sons visiting Washington, and a socialist leader losing his leverage.

Lula Brazil US meltdown: socialist president attacks Trump and Rubio

Lula’s outburst exposes the real fault lines in the Brazil-US relationship

Brazil’s President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva lost his composure in a stunning press conference this week, launching personal attacks against both President Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

“That Marco Rubio guy is anti-Latin American,” Lula declared publicly, calling him “a deadly enemy of Cuba.”

He also called Trump “the emperor of the world” and warned that “if the United States wants trouble, Brazil isn’t going to cry.”

Strong words from a man who was convicted of corruption and money laundering under Operation Car Wash — accepting bribes from engineering firms in exchange for Petrobras contracts — and who served time in prison before his conviction was later annulled on procedural grounds.

The mask came off. This is who Lula really is.

The real trigger: tariffs, Bolsonaro, and wounded pride

The immediate cause of Lula’s rage is a new proposed 25% tariff on Brazilian goods under Section 301 of U.S. trade law, targeting what Washington calls “unreasonable” Brazilian trade practices.

But the context goes deeper.

Trump had previously hit Brazil with 50% tariffs after the prosecution and conviction of former President Jair Bolsonaro — sentenced to 27 years for his 2022 coup attempt — a man Trump openly supports.

Bolsonaro’s sons recently visited Washington and met with Trump, and Lula accused them publicly of being “traitors to the nation” for allegedly lobbying the U.S. to impose tariffs.

Lula felt blindsided. He had left a May White House meeting believing relations were improving. They were not.

What this means for Lula Brazil US relations and America First

The Lula Brazil US relationship is not just about soybeans and steel.

Washington also recently designated two Brazilian criminal gangs as terrorist organizations — a move that directly threatens Lula politically, since it bolsters his opposition.

And beneath the trade war lies a deeper strategic reality. Brazil sits on some of the world’s most critical rare earth deposits.

China has been aggressively courting Brazil through BRICS and infrastructure deals. Lula thinks that gives him leverage. He is wrong.

A socialist president who defends Cuba, coddles Venezuela, and attacks American officials in public press conferences is not a partner. He is a problem.

America First trade policy is not a personal attack on Brazil. It is a message to every nation that cozying up to Beijing while demanding Washington’s favor is not a viable strategy.

Lula can call Trump an emperor. But emperors don’t beg for tariff relief. 🇺🇸💪🔥 #LulaBrazilUS #AmericaFirst #Brazil
