Governor Rocha Moya Indicted: How the Sinaloa Cartel Bought a Mexican Governor

U.S. prosecutors indicted Sinaloa Governor Rocha Moya and nine officials for allegedly protecting the Sinaloa Cartel — stealing ballots, bribing officials, and flooding America with fentanyl. Both the governor and Culiacán's mayor stepped down. Mexico calls the evidence "insufficient." American families call it a crisis.

Sinaloa Cartel Owned the Governor

A U.S. federal indictment unsealed in New York accuses Sinaloa Governor Rubén Rocha Moya and nine current and former Mexican officials of operating as a political shield for the Sinaloa Cartel.

Not just tolerating them — actively serving them.

Cartel operatives allegedly stole ballot boxes, kidnapped rivals, and intimidated opposition candidates to install Governor Rocha in office in 2021.

In exchange: fentanyl flowing north, millions in bribes, and political protection for the Chapitos — the sons of El Chapo.

The DEA calls the Sinaloa Cartel a designated terrorist organization. Mexico’s government calls the evidence “insufficient.”

Governor Rocha: Sovereignty or Complicity?

Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum (@Claudiashein) responded carefully: “My position on these events is as follows: truth, justice and the defense of sovereignty.”

Sovereignty. That word is doing a lot of heavy lifting here.

If “irrefutable evidence” is her threshold, Washington’s 70,000+ annual American fentanyl deaths might qualify.

Rocha has since taken “temporary leave” — conveniently losing his legal immunity in the process.

His own party ally, Culiacán Mayor Juan de Dios Gámez, also stepped down. Two officials. Same cartel. Same excuses.

Trump Hits Mexico Where It Hurts

Charging a sitting governor is what analysts call a diplomatic “nuclear option.” Trump isn’t bluffing — and USMCA review pressure makes this even more acute.

Sheinbaum walks a razor’s edge: act against Governor Rocha Moya and risk fracturing her Morena coalition; don’t act and watch Washington tighten the screws further.

Either way, the cartel rot inside Mexico’s political establishment is now fully exposed — and American families burying sons and daughters from fentanyl overdoses deserve better than sovereignty speeches.
