Brazil Threatens Reciprocity After U.S. Expels Attaché

According to Reuters, Washington asked Brazilian federal police attaché Marcelo Ivo de Carvalho to leave the United States, and Lula said Brazil could respond with reciprocity if his government concludes there was abuse in the case.

That means this is no longer just a narrow diplomatic annoyance.

It is becoming a sovereignty test between a U.S. administration enforcing its own standards and a Brazilian government that seems tempted to turn a bilateral dispute into political theater.

Lula Risks a Clash

Reuters also reports that Brazilian officials were weighing reciprocal steps after the U.S. move, which raises the cost of friction far beyond one attaché.

Brasília says that it has every right to defend its officials through normal diplomacy, but smart governments do not confuse symbolic retaliation with strategic leverage.

The United States matters too much to Brazil’s long-term interests for this to become an ego contest.

Brazil Plays With Fire

When leaders escalate for nationalist effect, they may win headlines at home and lose room to maneuver abroad.

A serious government lowers temperature, protects national interests, and avoids turning every dispute with Washington into a public spectacle.

Stability is still more valuable than applause.
